Dunton Town House
What's this place all about?
Dunton Town House is the latest opening by the owners of Dunton Hot Springs and Dunton River Camp, the tastefully rustic converted mining town-slash-summer glamping outpost in a picturesque valley an hour's drive south. The Town House's location couldn't be better, on a pretty side street just down from Telluride's main drag, and steps from the gondola. Though the facade looks like a classic painted clapboard B&B, the interior whisks you away to the Tyrol, with authentic Austrian fabrics and hand-carved wooden antiques—reflecting the influx of Tyrolian emigrés who settled in this region from the 1880's, not to mention the owners' own heritage. Only 10 people can stay at a time, so the Town House feels ultra-homey, with a mud room and family-style dining table, plus eclectic original art from the owners' collection.
Nice. Who's staying here?
The Dunton brand attract a plugged-in and stylish international crowd, and the Town House is no exception. The set-up is especially great for families.
Tell us everything about the rooms.
There are five bedrooms, each decorated differently in a kind of contemporary mountain style: Think warm-hued linens and plaid fabrics with faux-fir throws and in-wall fire places. The effect is a kind of Western-Alpine hybrid that feels cozy and clean. The rooms at the top have the best view of town and the surrounding San Juan Mountains.
What's the dining situation?
It's breakfast only, but the Town House is just a stone's throw from many top-tier restaurants in town. It's also across the street from 221 South Oak, a veg-friendly bistro helmed by Top Chef alum Eliza Gavin, and Taco del Gnar (aka Gnarly Tacos), a great spot for flavorful Korean short rib or shrimp tempura tacos and the tastiest margaritas.
Staff: If you could award one a trophy, who gets it, and why?
Gareth takes care of everything, from lift tickets to dinner reservations to excursions like cross-country skiing or fly-fishing on the San Miguel River. Despite its small size, the property is full-service, offering cruiser bikes in summer and ski storage and boot drying stations in winter.
Anything stand out about other services and features?
The hotel offers free parking.
What's the bottom line?
While Telluride has plenty of lodging over the hill in Mountain Village and in and around town, Dunton Town House stands out as a stylishly personalized B&B that punches above its weight in terms of style and service. Plus it's super convenient to the town's main drag and gondola.
